Spain Opposes Imposing Conditions On Serbia Regarding Kosovo

Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vuk Jeremic yesterday said that Spain will not allow the EU to impose any conditions on Serbia regarding its position on Kosovo-Metohija in the process of its European integration because Spain has an identical attitude concerning the unilateral independence of the southern Serbian province.
The Serbian Foreign Affairs Minister, after his meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, said he was explicitly told that no one can force Spain to recognize the unilateral independence and therefore no one can force Serbia to do so either.
Jeremic emphasized that the signing of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) can in no way change Serbia’s policy towards Kosovo.
Spanish Foreign Minister restated the principled position of the Spanish government on the issue. Spain considers the unilateral proclamation of independence illegal and in contravention of international law and that is why Spain will not recognise Kosovo’s independence.
Jeremic said – Serbia and Spain have excellent relations, that they agree on the most important issues and that there are no disputes between them. Spain is one of Serbia’s greatest supporters on its way to Europe and Madrid is ready to sign the SAA as soon as tomorrow.
He said – the quality of these relations can also be seen by the fact that our country has been given a great honour by inviting me to be the first foreign official to visit Spain after the formation of the new government, and by the fact that during my mandate I have had the greatest number of visits to Spain.
The two diplomats signed the Agreement on cooperation between the two ministries of foreign affairs during yesterday visit, which confirms donations from the Spanish ministry to the Serbian one for building administrative capacities necessary for EU accession.
