Belgrade: According to a leading pollster, the approaching presidential elections of Serbia will confront an unsure result, depending on the voter turnout and stand of Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and his party.
The pollster interviewed 1,520 respondents from across Serbia.
Srecko Mihajlovic, head of polling team of the Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CeSID), said “Kostunica’s support is vital.” He referred it to the conservative leader of Democratic Party of Serbia.
Mihajlovic said if all parties in the ruling coalition and the pro-Western opposition Liberal Democratic Party supported the President and Democratic Party leader Boris Tadic in second round on Feb. 3, then he would be re-elected.
The ruling coalition party forms the Democratic Party of Serbia led by Kostunica, Tadic’s pragmatic Democratic Party and pro-market G17 Plus Party.
Kostunica and party will back Velmir Ilic (the New Serbia Party) in the first round of voting due on Jan. 20.
According to CeSID’s poll, between Dec.25 and Dec.31 2007, no one other than pro-Western Tadic and hardline nationalist Tomislav Nikolic seem to receive more than 50 percent of vote to win in first round.
Mihajlovic said, “Low turnout of between 3.2 and 3.5 million will likely secure Nikolic’s victory.”
Nikolic would get support of 21 percent of voters, Tadic 19 percent, Ilic and Milutin Mrkonjic of the Socialist Party 4 percent each and Liberal Democratic Party leader Cedomir Jovanovic 3 percent of Voters.
