Four dead as floods hit Romania

Bucharest – At least four people died and two people were still missing in Romania’s North West after four rivers flooded, Romanian media reported Sunday.

A tourist family of three, including a 14-year-old boy, died in the Maramures region after the wooden cabin they were staying in collapsed following severe rain late on Saturday, according to the Romanian news agency Mediafax.

At least 3000 people were still trapped by the floods, Romanian Interior Minister Cristian David said on Sunday.

The region has been hit by torrential rains which have also left 13 people dead in neighbouring Ukraine, which was facing the worst flood disaster in 100 years, leaving at least 13 people including 5 children dead, according to the government in Kiev.

Romania, which has been hit especially in the North, was at risk of further flooding on Monday, meteorologists said.

Thousands of people in the north eastern town of Pascani were evacuated from their homes and hundreds of people worked to fortify embankments on Sunday as new floods were expected from the river Siret.

Romania’s North East, including the historic Bukovina region, has been hit by floods since Friday. Almost 9,000 people from 167 towns and villages have been taken to safety across the country, and 1,700 hectares of farmland were submerged by water, according to the interior ministry. (dpa)
