Heart Diseases on the Rise

A report recently released by the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation states, warns of a phenomenal increase in the rate of heart disease afflictions amongst the younger generation.
As blood pressure rates among the Canadian citizens shot up by 77% and other contributing factors such as diabetes and obesity on the increase as a result of a decadent and sedentary lifestyle being enjoyed by the populations of developed nations, fears of a “perfect storm of heart disease on our horizon” seem to be grounded in reality.

As heart disease patients get younger with 20 – 30 year olds developing cardiovascular conditions, the report called for a national strategy to combat the risks. Ross, Associate Dean of research at Northern Ontario School of Medicine cited obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and physical inactivity as the main reasons behind the rising cases.

“In Sudbury, for example, the population is getting older. The baby boomers are entering an age where they are at high risk for heart disease. That’s a non-modifiable risk factor. When you have that on a background of all these modifiable risk factors continuing to increase … it really is going to be creating a huge burden on our health-care system”, averred Ross.
