A study done by the researchers of the Glasgow University claim that drugs are the main culprit behind the high morality rate in Scotland. Scotland has 15% higher death rate as compared to England and Wales.
The researchers said that the said more than half of the difference had been explained by higher rates of deprivation in Scotland. The researchers claimed that many deaths which are indirect result of drug menace are not recorded as drug-related deaths. Such deaths somewhere have connection with drug-taking lifestyles. Drugs kill many people every year directly or indirectly. Indirectly it can lead to infections, assaults and suicides.
Professor Michael Bloor from the Centre for Drug Misuse Research at Glasgow University said that drug users were found to be 12 times more likely to die than someone from the general population. Researchers added that the successful anti-drugs campaigns can save many lives in UK. Scottish government said a total of £94m will be spent on the programs which will help people to recover and live drug-free lives.
