Researchers, from the University of California, held a study that shows the effect of meditation on increasing the individual’s ability to stay focused, with longer periods of high concentration.Meditation has always proved helpful in maintaining a serene mind, with more creative abilities. A person who suffers from depression or anxiety is also recommended to appoint a part of his/her day for meditation.
Nevertheless, in a study inspired by a Buddhist monk, researchers managed to reveal more revolutionary benefits of meditation; daily meditation can increase will power and mental fortitude.
During this study, 60 participants, with average age of 49 years, were split into two groups. One group was subjected to three months of regular meditation. Members of both groups took a 30 minute computer test that estimates the ability of the participants in visual distinction and attention.
At the end of the study, participants managed to sustain their full attention for a longer time, increasing visual sharpness. Meditation is proved to enhance the participants’ performance during the test.
Katherine MacLean, the leader of the research team working on this study, said “People may think meditation is something that makes you feel good and going on a meditation retreat is like going on vacation, and you get to be at peace with yourself. That’s what people think until they try it”.
