Los Angeles – The Philadelphia 76ers, addressing the need for outside shooting, acquired long-distance marksman Jason Kapono from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for rugged rebounding forward Reggie Evans.
“We are very excited to add one of the league’s most prolific three-point shooters in Jason Kapono,” Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski said Tuesday in a statement. “We feel that this move addresses our goal of improving our shooting from the perimeter.”
The 76ers ranked at the bottom of the league in their three-point field-goal percentage last season. However, Kapono, a two-time winner of the NBA’s Shootout at All-Star Weekend, would immediately plug up that hole.
Of the players that have made at least 250 three-pointers in league history, Kapono (385 of 848) and Steve Kerr (726 of 1,599) are the most accurate, hitting 0.45 per cent.
In 80 games last season, Kapono averaged 8.2 points, 1.3 assists and 2 rebounds and shot 42.8 per cent from behind the arc.
The Raptors, meanwhile, landed Evans, who was expected to provide inside toughness the club lacked last season.
The seven-year veteran averaged 3.3 points and 4.6 boards in 14.4 minutes per game last year for Philadelphia. He has ranked in the top 10 in rebounds per 48 minutes played in each of the past six seasons.
“Reggie Evans will certainly add an element of toughness to our team,” Raptors president Bryan Colangelo said in a statement. “He has very good rebounding and defensive instincts, addressing two areas where we have underperformed.”
The Raptors recently hired former Memphis Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni as an assistant to Jay Triano while cutting ties with assistants Mike Evans and Gord Herbert. (dpa)
