In final US box office tally, Hangover overcomes Up

New York  – The comedy Hangover came from behind to beat Disney Pixar animated film Up at the weekend box office after final tallies were tabulated on Monday.

Earlier estimates released Sunday, showed that Up had stayed at the top of the US box office for a second week.

But final numbers showed Hangover, about a Las Vegas bachelor party that goes awry, with 45 million dollars, more than the original estimate of 43.3 million. The film stars Ed Helms of The Office and tells the story of a group of friends who wake up the morning after a bash to find a tiger and baby in their hotel room, unable to remember how either got there.

Up, a film about the adventures of a grouchy old man and a stowaway who fly to South America, took in 44.2 million dollars at theatres.

In third place was Land of the Lost, starring Will Ferrell, at 19.5 million dollars. Based on a 1970s television series, the film is about a scientist, played by Ferrell, who is transported to a parallel universe in which dinosaurs live.

Ben Stiller-starrer Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian was fourth with 14.7 million dollars, while in fifth place was Star Trek with earnings of 8.4 million dollars. (dpa)
