Arsonists attack police station and banks in Athens

Athens  – The recent series of arson attacks in Greece continued Wednesday night, with Molotov cocktails thrown at the entrance of a police station in the Athens suburb of Melissia, Greek radio reported.

No one was injured in the attack but at least six police cars were destroyed. The police did not make any arrests.

Almost simultaneously, several household gas cylinders were set alight outside three bank branches in the Greek capital causing significant damage, the fire brigade said.

Greece has been plagued by almost daily bomb and arson attacks on various targets, including banks and multinational businesses, since the police shooting of a teenager in December 2008.

The shooting sparked the worst riots the country has seen in decades.

The violence has embarrassed Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis’ government, which has been criticized for its inability to protect citizens.

The government has vowed to crack down on the increasing violence and has sought advice from British police. (dpa)
