Belgrade: According to the Serbian Constitution, the first session of parliament must take place within the next 30 days, after the official election results have been published.
So, according to the Serbian Electoral Commission (RIK), the first parliamentary session is expected to be held by June 19, 2008. The parties and coalitions that won seats have to submit the names of their future MPs to the RIK by May 30. And, If they failed to do so, they will be given a further five days.
Once mandates have been distributed, MPs will be issued certification of their election by RIK, which will also submit a report on the conduct of elections to parliament.
According to the Constitution, the mandates of new MPs will be verified at the first session of parliament, and the new parliament will be constituted with the confirmation of two-thirds of the mandates.
Starting from then, a deadline of 90 days, ending in mid-September, will be set for a new government to be formed. The Constitution states that parliament will be dissolved if no government is formed in that time.
Speaker and one or more deputy speakers will be elected and MPs’ mandates will be verified in the first session of the Serbian parliament.
